Joshua 24:1-3a,14-25

1Then Joshua gathered all the tribes of Israel to Shechem, and summoned the elders, the heads, the judges, and the officers of Israel; and they presented themselves before God. 2And Joshua said to all the people, “Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel: Long ago your ancestors—Terah and his sons Abraham and Nahor—lived beyond the Euphrates and served other gods.

3Then I took your father Abraham from beyond the River and led him through all the land of Canaan and made his offspring many. I gave him Isaac; 14“Now therefore revere the Lord, and serve him in sincerity and in faithfulness; put away the gods that your ancestors served beyond the River and in Egypt, and serve the Lord.

15Now if you are unwilling to serve the Lord, choose this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your ancestors served in the region beyond the River or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you are living; but as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.”

16Then the people answered, “Far be it from us that we should forsake the Lord to serve other gods; 17for it is the Lord our God who brought us and our ancestors up from the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery, and who did those great signs in our sight. He protected us along all the way that we went, and among all the peoples through whom we passed; 18and the Lord drove out before us all the peoples, the Amorites who lived in the land. Therefore we also will serve the Lord, for he is our God.”

19But Joshua said to the people, “You cannot serve the Lord, for he is a holy God. He is a jealous God; he will not forgive your transgressions or your sins. 20If you forsake the Lord and serve foreign gods, then he will turn and do you harm, and consume you, after having done you good.” 21And the people said to Joshua, “No, we will serve the Lord!”

 22Then Joshua said to the people, “You are witnesses against yourselves that you have chosen the Lord, to serve him.” And they said, “We are witnesses.” 23He said, “Then put away the foreign gods that are among you, and incline your hearts to the Lord, the God of Israel.” 24The people said to Joshua, “The Lord our God we will serve, and him we will obey.” 25So Joshua made a covenant with the people that day, and made statutes and ordinances for them at Shechem. This is God’s word for God’s people. Thanks be to God.

READER JOEL – 2.22.23

The O.T. reading is taken from The Message; Joel chapter 2:1-2, 12-17

1-3 Blow the ram’s horn trumpet in Zion!

Trumpet the alarm on my holy mountain!

Shake the country up!

GOD’s Judgment’s on its way—the Day’s almost here!

A black day! A Doomsday!

Clouds with no silver lining!

Like dawn light moving over the mountains,

a huge army is coming.

There’s never been anything like it

and never will be again.

Wildfire burns everything before this army

and fire licks up everything in its wake.

Before it arrives, the country is like the Garden of Eden.

When it leaves, it is Death Valley.

Nothing escapes unscathed.

Verses 12-17

12But there’s also this, it’s not too late—

GOD’s personal Message!—

“Come back to me and really mean it!

Come fasting and weeping, sorry for your sins!”

13-14 Change your life, not just your clothes.

Come back to GOD, your God.

And here’s why: God is kind and merciful.

He takes a deep breath, puts up with a lot,

This most patient God, extravagant in love,

always ready to cancel catastrophe.

Who knows? Maybe he’ll do it now,

maybe he’ll turn around and show pity.

Maybe, when all’s said and done,

there’ll be blessings full and robust for your GOD!

15-17Blow the ram’s horn trumpet in Zion!

Declare a day of repentance, a holy fast day.

Call a public meeting.

Get everyone there. Consecrate the congregation.

Make sure the elders come,

but bring in the children, too, even the nursing babies,

Even men and women on their honeymoon—

interrupt them and get them there.

Between Sanctuary entrance and altar,

let the priests, GOD’s servants, weep tears of repentance.

Let them intercede: “Have mercy, GOD, on your people!

Don’t abandon your heritage to contempt.

READER – 2.22.23

Don’t let the pagans take over and rule them

and sneer, ‘And so where is this God of theirs?’”

The N.T. lesson is from 2 Corinthians chapter 5, verses 20 through chapter 6 verses 1-10

Also taken from The Message.

16-20Because of this decision we don’t evaluate people by what they have or how they look.

We looked at the Messiah that way once and got it all wrong, as you know. We certainly

don’t look at him that way anymore. Now we look inside, and what we see is that anyone

united with the Messiah gets a fresh start, is created new. The old life is gone; a new life

emerges! Look at it! All this comes from the God who settled the relationship between us

and him, and then called us to settle our relationships with each other. God put the world

square with himself through the Messiah, giving the world a fresh start by offering

forgiveness of sins. God has given us the task of telling everyone what he is doing. We’re

Christ’s representatives. God uses us to persuade men and women to drop their

differences and enter into God’s work of making things right between them. We’re

speaking for Christ himself now: Become friends with God; he’s already a friend with

you.

21 How? you ask. In Christ. God put the wrong on him who never did anything wrong, so

we could be put right with God.

1-10 Companions as we are in this work with you, we beg you, please don’t squander one

bit of this marvelous life God has given us. God reminds us,

I heard your call in the nick of time;

The day you needed me, I was there to help.

Well, now is the right time to listen, the day to be helped. Don’t put it off; don’t frustrate

God’s work by showing up late, throwing a question mark over everything we’re doing.

Our work as God’s servants gets validated—or not—in the details. People are watching us

as we stay at our post, alertly, unswervingly . . . in hard times, tough times, bad times;

when we’re beaten up, jailed, and mobbed; working hard, working late, working without

eating; with pure heart, clear head, steady hand; in gentleness, holiness, and honest love;

when we’re telling the truth, and when God’s showing his power; when we’re doing our

best setting things right; when we’re praised, and when we’re blamed; slandered, and

honored; true to our word, though distrusted; ignored by the world, but recognized by

God; terrifically alive, though rumored to be dead; beaten within an inch of our lives, but

refusing to die; immersed in tears, yet always filled with deep joy; living on handouts, yet

enriching many; having nothing, having it all.

“PASS ME NOT, O GENTLE SAVIOR”     UMH  #351

                                                                          Words: Fanny J. Crosby; Music: William H. Doane

Pass me not, O gentle Savior,
Hear my humble cry,
While on others Thou art calling,
Do not pass me by.

 [Refrain]

Savior, Savior,
Hear my humble cry;
While on others Thou art calling,
Do not pass me by.

2 Let me at a throne of mercy
Find a sweet relief;
Kneeling there in deep contrition,
Help my unbelief.

[Refrain]

3 Trusting only in Thy merit,
Would I seek Thy face;
Heal my wounded, broken spirit,
Save me by Thy grace.

 [Refrain]

4 Thou the Spring of all my comfort,
More than life to me,
Whom have I on earth beside Thee?
Whom in heav'n but Thee?

[Refrain]

Savior, Savior,
Hear my humble cry;
While on others Thou art calling,
Do not pass me by.

Old Testament Lesson

Psalm 118:18-29 - New Living Translation

18 The LORD has punished me severely, but he did not let me die.

19 Open for me the gates where the righteous enter, and I will go in and thank the LORD.

20 These gates lead to the presence of the LORD, and the godly enter there.

21 I thank you for answering my prayer and giving me victory!

22 The stone that the builders rejected has now become the cornerstone.

23 This is the LORD’s doing, and it is wonderful to see.

24 This is the day the LORD has made. We will rejoice and be glad in it.

25 Please, LORD, please save us. Please, LORD, please give us success.

26 Bless the one who comes in the name of the LORD. We bless you from the house of the LORD.

27 The LORD is God, shining upon us. Take the sacrifice and bind it with cords on the altar.

28 You are my God, and I will praise you! You are my God, and I will exalt you!

29 Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good! His faithful love endures forever.
